Ventura to Monterey

We love heading north from Ventura.  The golden grasses and green oaks speed by.  Endless rows of vineyards cover the hills and valleys.  Before we know it we have reached our first destination:  Tacos de Mexico in Morro Bay.  The best Mexican food north of the border as far as we're concerned.  And we always share a wet chile verde burrito, mild sauce, no sour cream - our favorite.

Our first night out we always get a room in a nice hotel, a pact we made several years ago after almost coming to blows on our first day of a long camping trip.  We were exhausted from weeks of getting ready to leave, and we were grouchy and tired.  So we decided the best solution was to always have a reservation waiting for us at a cozy and relaxing hotel.  This year we chose the Spendrift Hotel on Cannery Row in Monterey.  Our room was a total delight.  It had two balconies, one overlooking Cannery Row and one with a view of the bay.

Included were wine and cheese in the evening (which we missed because we arrived fairly late) and a full continental breakfast.  We had hoped to have dinner at our favorite Paradisio restaurant next door and were disappointed to find it had closed.  So we took the suggestion of the hotel manager and had dinner at The Hopper, a popular seafood and steak restaurant a short walk from our hotel.  The grilled artichoke was undercooked and chewy and the sour dough rolls were hard and cold.  But, the dinner of baked halibut and sauteed spinach on a mound of garlic mashed potatoes was mouth watering.

The next day we headed for the California Redwoods.
