FALL VACATION 2011 - Thursday - 9/22/11: Lynden, WA

It is raining – hard.  We spend a leisure morning cooking French toast made from thick slices of our wonderful Italian bread.  We hang out in the RV listening to the rain falling.  I catch up on the blog and Fred experiments with the video editor he downloaded for the trip.  He downloads an Orca video to the blog.

The rain lightens up and we get a little stir crazy.  We grab our cameras and hop into the VW to hunt down some photos.  The light outside is perfect – overcast skies with filtered sunlight.

We head out of town and come upon a magnificent little lake surrounded by well-to-do homes.  The air is still and the sun is low, casting a marvelous reflection on the lake.  I take several photos, hoping one will come close to showing just how breathtaking it actually is.

We drive through the little town of Lynden, WA.  There is an obvious Dutch influence here (note the windmill-type restaurant).  The residential streets are carefully manicured and neat as a pin.  The Dutch must be a very tidy group.

We drive through the countryside noticing a definite aroma of dairy farms and black and white cows.  This is farm country – lots of corn, blackberries, horses, and sheep.

We pass through the tiny town of Nooksack in the Nooksack Valley on State Route 9, population 1,338.    In a blink of an eye we leave the Nooksackians behind us.

As evening approaches we decide to head north and hopefully capture some more photos of the Canadian geese settling in for the night.  We drive to the same spot and sit and wait.  Nothing.  We wait another half hour – still nothing.

We head back to our campsite and just as we are once again approaching the lake with the great reflections,  silhouetted in the sky are our beautiful Canadian geese.  They have decided to spend the evening on the lake.  Bummer, it is too dark to take photos.  We listen to them honking to one another as we drive past.

We arrive back at the RV around 7:30 pm.  A quick dinner of canned chicken noodle soup and some more of the Italian bread (yes, it was a very big loaf).

We read a little and lights out at 10:00.
